Base Hospital 13, a hospital unit recruited at Presbyterian Hospital of Chicago, saw its first service in World War I ministering to sick and wounded at Limoges, France. A request from Washington, D.C. for organizing a similar model to serve World War II, brought veterans of the Base Hospital into the organization of a new hospital unit that came to be known as the 13th General Hospital.
